EXTRACTS FROM "STANDARD.?' MAY 20, 1914. British emigrants for the first four months of 1914 had totalled 13,016, a docrease of 10,407 compared with the similar period of the previous year. The. number who had come to New Zealand was 2367, a decrease of 2513. Three shops in Shannon had been com pletely destroyed by fire which had broken out overnight iii a refreshment room and had quickly spread to the other buildings. Plague had broken out in Hong Kong, there having been 1460 cases reported since January; 1301 deaths had oc curred.
