THE BERLIN RAID

(Rec 12.55 p.m.) LONDON, April 18. The British United Press correspondent at n United States bomber base says that 200 German fighters rising to defend Berlin in to-day s raid slashed for 15 minutes against American heavy bombers over the city. Jne fighters roared through their own flak and the cloud blanket., which was almost solid over the capital. lne bomber crews were unable to get a good view of the bombing, but they reported seeing fires through the breaks. The weather also prevented the Allied fighters from keeping formation with the bombers, enabling the Germans to engage in a sort of guerrilla warfare in the clouds over the city itself. The weather improved as later waves of bombers reached the city and some managed to drop their bombs visually. Other waves of heavy bomber 6 and their escorts attacked major targets near . the capital. Among these were a Heinkel bomber production centre at Oanienburg (20 miles north-east of Berlin) and an aircraft component factory at Rathenow (35 miles north-west of Berlin).
