POWER SUPPLY

Mr J. Boycc presided at a meeting of the Mann.watu-Oroua Electric Power Board yesterday. The Kiwilca County Council asked the board to restore the street lighting at Waituna West, Mr AVaters (engineer) said that no street light on an automatic switch could be left unattended under the regulations. It was decided to advise the council that if some person could bo found to take charge in tho event of an emergency then the lighting would be restored. Tho Feilding A. and .P. Association made application for the free use. of material for its Show and also lighting. Mr Waters said that this lighting was on a prohibited load. It was decided to apply to tho controller for permission to connect illuminated lighting. Tho applications of Messrs W. G. Ramson, (Hiwinui), R. W. Rentone (Halcombe Road). and.W. D. Marshall (Cunninghams) . for electric ranges were granted. The managing-secretary (Mr K. W. .Eglinton) stated that the sales of electricity during the month amounted to £8872 as against £8792. Tho total for the eight months was £99 ; 080 as against. £97,543 for the same period last year. This was an increase of £1537. The engineer reported that maintenance and . improvement work had been carried out. The work of metering the water-heater 9in the country districts had been completed. During the month 41 new consumers had been connected. These were chiefly made up of lighting and heating three, ranges six, water heaters nine, and motors 19.

In a supplementary report Mr Waters stated that less than a year ago the board erected about 3-A miles of 3300volt lines to supply a camp on the coast. This had now been abandoned, and the board had received instructions to disconnect and dismantle the lines and transformers. About 130 chains of the lino was on tho Foxton Line and passed tho homes of farmers who desired a sunplv. It seemed a waste to dismantle this section until it is known what tho residents wanted and would guarantee, and also what tho department wanted for the lino as it stands. The load to be picked up was not great but the line was already there. Preliminary negotiations had been opened for a firm which proposed to install a sawmill on Kellow's Line, about half a mile south of Taikorea Road. Two motors totalling 75 h.p. would be installed and it would require about half a mile of 11,000-volt line to be built to supply the oower. It was estimated it would take 10 years to cut the pinus insignis timber available.
