CONTROL OF RIVERS
Mr J. Calloscn presided at a meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua River Board. On the motion of Mr W. S. Carter, a resolution was passed tliat the minute stating that the board had no power to order tho removal of Spring's bank be deleted from the minutes of the meeting of December 9, 1943, and that the hoard's solicitor's opinion be obtained thereon. In reply to a letter the Moutoa Drainage Board did not agree that no provision had been made for the widening of the Main Drain to enable it adequately to feed the extended flood-gates proposed by tho River Board. After a lengthy discussion, it was agreed that tho Monloa board and the Flax Committee be invited to meet the River Board at the lattcr's office on January 20 in view of the understanding that the Moutoa board objected to the proposed extension of tho flood-gates. _ ' On the motion of tha chairman, a resolution was passed to ask the Public Works Department to have the work on the Whirokino Cut speeded up.
The Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council advised that the council had approved a £2 for £1 subsidy (£8000) for the construction of tho Parekawau and Koputaroa Cuts, estimated to cost £12,000. The council had also approved of a £2 for £1 subsidy (£3000) for the construction of Tapunga Cut No. 2, estimated to cost £4500.
