Inspector H. Scott has returned to Palmerston North after a holiday spent in Auckland and resumed his duties at the police station this morning. Inspector L. R. Capp, of Wellington, who has been relieving during Inspector Scott's absence, returned to Wellington to-day. The late Corporal R. J. B. (Jim) Stephenson, who was killed in action on December 3, 1943, was the elder son of Mr and Mrs W. J. Stephenson, of Awapuni, and grandson of the late Mr and Mrs R. M. Bryant* of Tiritca. He was born in Palmerston North in 1919 and received his education at the Central School, tho Longburn School, and the Palmerston North Boys' High School, later taking engineering at the Technical School. He was in the employ of an engineering firm in Palmerston North when he volunteered for service, and after doing his Territorial training he went deer-culling in the Taupo district until eventually called up for overseas. He left New Zealand in September, 1941, and was kept at base in the Ordnance Department until a few months ago, when he was transferred to a tank brigade. Being a lover of nature, he was always happy in the bush and his chief sports were pig-hunting and deerstalking. He was a great reader and even as a boy had a fund of general knowledge. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. Besides his parents, he leaves to mourn their loss one brother. Walter, in the Middle East Forces, and three sisters, Mrs F. Pond, of Otaki Gorge, and Misses Muriel and Jean Stephenson, of Awapuni.
