Algiers is the capital and seat of the Government in French North Africa, and has a population of about 250,000. In normal it ranks next after Marseilles among French ports for tonnage cleared, and next after Marseilles and Lo Havre for the number of ships, the importance of Algiers lias steadily increased, in the present century, both from the political and business point ot view and as a place of residence, hollowing ropented attempts to subdue pirates who had taken ovor the city, in 1816 it was bombarded by a British squadron under Lord Kxmouth, assisted by Dutch men-of-war. The piracy of the Algerians, howover, continued until 1860. On July 4 of that year, a French army under General de Bourmont attacked the city, which capitulated on. tho following da Oran, which has a population of over 200 000 stands at the head of tho Unit of Oran and is an ijmportant naval base. It was hero, in July, 1940, that the Royal Navy took decisive action to place the majority of the French naval craft stationed there out of the reach of the Nazis. Oran is 260 miles from Algiers and is occupied by the general in command of the military division, and also serves as barracks. It is the seat of a big trade and tho harbour is sheltered by a largo jetty. Tho Bey Mohammed took possession of Oran in March. 1792, from the Spaniards and made it his residence until the fall of Algiers. The French Army entered the city and took possession in 1831. Casablanca, a seaport on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, has a population of about 125,000. In recent years it has become a considerable port, and harbour developments have made it one of the busiest towns of northern Africa, while ships of great tonnage can be accommodated. The town was originally founded by tho Portuguese on the sito of the ancient Anfa, which they destroyed in 1465. It was occupied by tho French in 1907 in consequence of the murder of a number of Froneh and Spanish workmen engaged on tho harbour works,
