DRAMATIC APPEAL
BY FAMOUS FRENCH GENERAL. LONDON, Nov. 8. It is clear that in Algiers the radio station at least is in Allied hands. Broadcasting from Algiers, General Giraud, who escaped from a German prison camp last spring, appealed to the Vichy forces to support him in welcoming the American invasion. “For the last two years,” he said, “we have scrupulously 'observed the terms of the armistice dcsjiite repeated violations by our enemies. To-day Germany and Italy want to occupy North Africa but America forestalls them and assures us of her loyal and disinterested support. “This is our chance for revival. AVe cannot neglect this opportunity of recovery. I take mv action station as one of you; I ask you to trust me. AVe have only one passion—France. Our only aim is victory. Remember the North African army holds the fate of France in its hands.”
Rabat (on the Atlantic coast) is apparently also in American hands. The radio there broadcast General Eisenhower’s communique to the North 'African forces. It is officially announced by Vichy that United States troops landed at Algiers and district at 7.30 a.m. The situation is serious. The Vichy radio says a dc Gaullist movement has broken out in Morocqo.
