OIL BORING ABANDONED

HARD ROCK ENCOUNTERED. Oil-boring operations near Marton and also at Mt. Stewart have been abandoned because the drills liavo struck solid rock which they cannot penetrate, says the Wanganui Chronicle.

The foreman of the Marton boro (Mr W. Duroy) stated that rook was •struck at a level of 6800 feet. As no oil would be beneath the rock there was no uso continuing the boring. A similar position obtains at Mt. Stewart, where solid rock was found at a depth of 4000 feet. The unexpected hard strata was struck at both bores within a few days of each other. After several attempts had been made to pierce the rock it was decided to abandon ojierations. A fortnight is expected to elapse before tlie men and their equipment leave the Marton district.
