HIGH SCHOOL BOARD.

Mr J. Knight presided at the monthly meeting of the High School Board of Managers, when advice was received from the Education Department giving approval for the painting of buildings to be carried out immediately. Applications for the position of iarm manager were reierred to the appropriate committee to deal with. It was resolved that the matter of investing money in national savings bonds "be considered in the new year when the hoard will be in a better position to assess the amount available for investment. Mr L. J. Wild (headmaster), in his report, said that the roll continued to fall slowly by the drift of boys and girls into employment. Mr H. F. O’Leary, K.C.. had consented to speak at the annual prizegiving ceremony. Owing to the increasing difficulty of getting the necessary labour for the two farms during the holiday period, it was agreed that the finance and farm committees go into the question of purchasing a two-cow milking plant. The report continued: “Mr D. Ferguson left at the end of the month to enter the Territorial camp at Palmerston North. The board’s a-ppeal to the Man-Power Committee was not uphold. As it is expected that Mr Ferguson will be away for the duration of the war, applications are being invited for a teacher to take his subjects and in the meantime Mr H Baigent is taking up the more immediately important sections of his work. Air J. Hart (farm manager) who voluntarily enlisted before conscription came ill but was in deference to the board's representations has not been called up, may lie taken next year and so it is necessary to see whether anyone not eligible for military service is available to take up the various important phases of his work on the farm and in the class-room. In connection with Emergency Precautions Scheme, I have done some preliminary organisation mainly with a view to finding ways and means of disposing of the boarders in the event of any sudden emergency.” Mr Tvnight reported on improvements made on the school farm on Sandon Road and was thanked for his assistance in sowing the mangold crop this season. The finances were reported on by Mr A. C. Buist, who stated that the position was satisfactory, but no indication could be given regarding the income next year by way of fees from hoarders.
