THIRTY YEARS AGO.

EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” OCTOBER 13, 1911. The steamer Macleav, en route from Sydney to Clarence River, had struck a rock in a fog and had sunk. Only two of the crew had landed on Broughton Island and it was feared the others had pel-idled. The Balkan countries had offered to go to the assistance of Bulgaria if she were attacked by Turkey. It was reported on Friday that Turkey was massing troops in Salonika. * According to a London message about 850 English men and women were to leave for New Zealand before Christmas. They were mostly assisted emigrants. Shooting and rioting were still continuin’' around Wuchang. The revolutionaries were leading processions through Wuchang and the adjacent villages and killing people.
