HOROWHENUA
As a result of several successive heavy frosts leaving a thin coating of ico ©n the surface of the main highway at Pukehou Hill, between Otaki and Manakau, a number of oars canto to grief in that locality on Saturday morning. Air T. A. Kidd, of Island Bay’ had his car thrown against a hank and damaged to the extent that it had to be towed away. Another ear m swerving to avoid Mr K Kidd, skidded on the iec and went off the road. A lady trving to pass between these two ears went into ft skid and struck both of them No one was injured and the damage 4 t«' the ears was not extensive. A little later. Mr Stewart, of Wellington, with several passengers, driving to the Palmerston North races, skidded near the same spot and damaged his car to tho extent that it had to be taken away by break-down wagon. Again no person was injured. The police later sprinkled the road with sand and controlled tho traffic at each end of die dangerous area until the surface of die road had thawed sufficiently to maka it safe.
