BATTLE FOR SMOLENSK
NAZIS CLAIM OCCUPATION POLES SUPPORT RUSSIANS LONDON,, July 18. The Deutschlandsender radio station interrupted its programme to-night to announce that the Russian city of Smolensk, halfway between Minsk and Moscow, was occupied on Wednesday. The Russians state that fighting is going on in the Smolensk area. The Germans claim that the forces which broke through a gap in the Stalin Line have widened the breach and that all attempts by tho Russians to carry out a counter-attack have failed. The capture of Smolensk had been claimed before by the Germans, but in an earlier communique issued to-day they did not mention the town. The Russians say there is no substantial change in the situation.
The Russians admit that the invaders have occupied four towns south of tho River Dniester, which they must cross before they can enter the rich Ukraine area. General Sikorski, the Polish Prime Minister and Commander-in-Chief, in a statement to-day declared he was in complete agreement with the recent statement that it was necessary to present a united front to Nazism. His desire was to establish friendly relations with Russia and reach a genuine mutual agreement on collaboration. It is announced that the Czechs are preparing to send a corps to Russia to fight against the Germans.
