BOOT OPERATIVES.
(Press Aissn.) AUCKLAND, July 14. The Government's first boot operatives' training school was officially opened to-day bv the Minister oi Labour (Mr Webb). The first course is being taken by 25 men and 15 women who will be intensively trained tor 16 weeks before being absorbed into factories. All the men are ineligible for military service, eight of them having leg disabilities, one being deaf and dumb, and the others being returned soldiers or the present war. While being trained the men receive o. weekly wage of £4 13s and the women £2. Those attending the present course were selected from about 200 male applicants and approximately GO women. As soon as this course is finished another will be started and already the school has received its first order, one for a large number of pairs of sandals; tor the army.
