GAR VAALS IMPRESSES. (Press Assn.) AUCKLAND, May 31 the Great Northern Steeplechase candidate Gar VaaJs gave a capital display at Kderslie this morning ridden by Ritchie to complete a round of the country, taking every lenco in his stride and finishing on in very solid style. 11c lias never been in better condition. The jumpers Dividend and Streamline, both ot whom are in the Great .Northern Hurdles, did strong work on the ilat and acquitted themselves m good etyie. The lormer is powerfully bunt and will prouably find the heavy going much to his liking. Tidewaiter, another hurdles candidate, covered a couple of rounds ou the tan track, but he was never going faster than liaifpace. Jle is in solid condition and, although ne has not done much .schooling since lie arrived at Ellerslie, has proved in the past that he is quite capable ot negotiating the nations satisfactorily. Esperanto Bay, a fairly strong trio lor the Great Northern Hurdles who has impressed track-watchers since he arrived from the south, was not given any serious work. He strode over a round and finished up by sprinting down' with a light weight. The best trials among the Cornwall Handicap horses were those of Valmint, Gladynev, Sir Cameron, and British ’Talent, all of whom acquitted themselves well. The best trials over seven furlongs were those of British Talent (Gilchrist), who covered that distance in 1.30 3-5 (a time which was equalled by Valmint (.Messervy). and Gladynev (Gilchrist), who impressed more than t Tea Gong (Hearn). Their time for the first half-mile was 51 l-ssec. Valmint did not work as well as did Gladynev, who finished solidly on the outside. The southern hack Arcitie Dawn shaded Auburn Hid over six furlongs run in 1.17, the best of the morning over the distance. Radio Gall (Ueddy) came home from the half-mile post in 50sec., a time which was not bettered. His htablomates Bron/.o (MeTuvish) and Bronze Emerald (Goad) left five furlongs behind in 1.3 4-5, setting the standard for that distance. The lormer, who ran a good rare at Te Rapa, has made progress since, and is rightly regarded as a promising maiden.
