SUPPLIES FOR BRITAIN.
U-BOATS EXTEND AC TV. NEW YORK. May 22. The Ottawa correspondent of the New York Times says that it is admitted in Ottawa that shipping losses in the Western Atlantic recently reached a point which proved that Germany was doing her utmost, with .submarines, to prevent American and Canadian war supplies reaching England. “The latest attacks reveal that German submarines are working much nearer the American coats and the Northern Atlantic,” says the correspondent. Thus it seems confirmed that the British patrol of the Eastern Atlantic has become very dangerous for German U-boats, and has compelled them to push father afield. Moreover, it is reported that attacks are often made against groups of ships which are guarded by a single armed merchantman.
Such protection, which was previously adequate in western waters, it is now recognised, must be augmented.
