BATTLE OF THE CHEESE.
(To the Editor.) * Sir, —Behold ! And it came to pass, that prior to the flood there appeared in the market square that which looked like unto a mouse and his name was T. Neut. And there appeared also another mouse, like unto the first mouse, and his name was M. A. N. Sford. And they twain did proceed in great haste unto the Ro-Tun-Da, for here were gathered a multitude of people to witness the ‘‘Battle of the Cheese.” For on the Ro-Tun-Da stood a
‘‘c-heese,” vea, a great “national” cheese. And for many days did the first mouse, and the second mouse, tussle with the cheese, each with energy and skill, to roll it into his own corner. Then the flood came. And behold, there appeared a third mouse like unto the first mouse, and the second mouse, and he was armed with great wisdom and a knife, and he opened his mouth and spake, and ho said, “Behold, the cheese is very big. Let us divide it into two equal parts, then each of you will have his own share, for I already have a ‘cheese’ of my own.” And with his knife he divided the “cheese.” But he lacked skill, for one half was greater than the other. “Nay, my brothers, do not quarrel, lot me cat that which is the overweight and each will then be equal.” After he had eaten much, it was found that the other was now the greater and he proceeded to partake of the other —and likewise until all was gone. And the people departed and the first mouse and the second mouse with them.—Behold, here is wisdom.—l am. etc.. ANCIENT. Palmerston North, 13/5/41.
