Advice has been received by Dlrs C. Anderson, of Weston Avenue, that her son. Sergeant Kenneth Anderson, N.Z.E.F., is safe and well. A't yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu "County Council, the chairman (Cr W. E. Barber) was appointed the council’s representative on the No. 9 District Highways Council. Mr P. 0. Skoglund was a visitor to Palmerston North yesterday, having presided at a sitting of the No. 2 Transport .Licensing Authority. lie proceeded to Wanganui to-day. Advice received in Palmerston North states that Major W. D. Philp. of the Second N.Z.E.F., is safe and well. Major Philp was a former officer in the Bth Field Battery, N.Z.A. Hon. F. Jones, Minister of Defence, visited Wait are re Beach near Foxton yesterday and inspected the mounted units which have been on manoeuvres. He was accompanied by Hon. A. Hamilton, a member of the War Cabinet. A motion of sympathy with Cr D. Collis, who recently fell and injured a leg. being confined to his bed, was passed at the meeting of the Kairanga County Council yesterday, members expressing the hope that Cr Collis would make a speedy recovery. Rev. W. Hain, Kennington, .Southland, who is the oldest Presbyterian minister in New Zealand, took part in the jubilee celebrations of the Presbytery of Mataura in Gore last week. Mr Hain, who is in Ivis ninety-eighth year, is a member of the Presbytery.
Information that their son LeadingAircraftsman R. L. W. Orchard, of the R.N.Z.A.F., who was one of the occupants of a plane which crashed near Montreal last month, received only cuts and bruises, has been received by Mr and Mrs F. L. Orchard, of 11 Matamau .Street, Palmerston North. Lead-ing-Aircraftsman Orchard’s escape was a fortunate one, especially as the pilot, a Canadian, was killed. A tribute to the services of Mr J. Linklater on the Foxton Harbour Board was paid at a meeting of the Tvairanga County Council yesterday, it being decided to send a letter thanking him for his valued work extending over many years. “Mr Link-' later has decided nor to offer his services at the forthcoming election,” said the chairman (Cr W. R. Hopcroft). “He has represented this council on the board for 23 years, and has been chairman for 21 years. Tie is deserving of the best thanks of the council for his long and faithful term.”
