Y.W.C.A.

Mrs C. A. Small* presided over the Mav meeting of the* board of directors of the Y.W.C.A. The acting general secretary’s report spoke of keen enthusiasm in the work of the various club under the association's control. The Mothers’ Club at present is concentrating on collecting books and knitted goods foT Miss M. Saunders’s work in the Far .Fast. The W.E.A. has provided a special course on music and literature to be given to the Found Table Club, the first of which was presented last Monday night, and gave promise of some most enjoyable programmes. These will be held at alternate meetings to Mr Billcns’s talks on current affairs. The Lyceum and 3Y9 Clubs have welcomed new members to their groups. The former is interested in a W.E.A. course on famous men and women of to-day, and to date Kemal Ataturk and Cliiang Kai-shek have been the bases of discussion and study. An indoor basketball team has also been entered in the Y.M.C.A. competitions. 3Y9 girls have had a.series of talks and demonstrations on beauty culture, given by Miss McKenzie. New spirit and vigour are evident in the Girl Citizens’ Club, especially now that their groups on house art, drama and behind the headlines have commenced. Two basketball teams are being entered in the competitions, and the girls have carried off remarkably well two special ceremonials —one on the Easter theme and one in honour of Mother’s Day. The first quarterly rally for the year was held on Wednesday evening at the home of Airs Small. Favourable reports were given by all the groups represented, and all present valued greatly the opportunity of meeting and discussion under such circumstances. Folk dancing classes are being held under the leadership of Mrs Elphiek. Airs Small, Airs I\. Dean, and Miss Vera Hirons have been appointed delegates to the triennial convention of the Y.W.C.A. to be held in Auckland this month. The acting-general secretary will also remain for a special secretarial training course after the convention.
