EXTRACTS FROM “STANDARD.” AI AY 12, 1911. On his next expedition to the Aniarctic, Dr Mawson was taking an aeroplane for the purpose of flying over the South Pole. Lieut. H. AYalkins, of the Essex Regiment, was to be the pilot. During a performance in the Empire Palace Theatre in Edinburgh, the scenery caught fire and in a short time the theatre was ablaze. Nine persons wore killed and a large number of others were missing. A fierce buttle in the Alexicati revolt was raging at Jaurcz. Hundreds on both sides bad been killed or wounded. Fogwcll, the Australian sculler, was to race Barry, the English champion, on the Thames in September for £4OO aside.
