“BOGGED” AT SOLLUM
ENEMY HARASSED. ABYSSINIAN OPERATIONS. (United Press Association. —Copyright) (1.45 p.m.) LONDON, April 30. The Italian and German forces attempting the invasion of Egypt were still “bogged” in the vicinity of Solium yesterday, according to informed sources in Cairo. British land and air forces harassed the enemy constantly while 'a sandstorm continued to rage, reducing visibility to under ten yards. The Navy shelled points on the coast road near Bardia and Tobruk^ where enemy eoncentra tionn were observed. Meanwhile, the rounding up of the Italians continues in Abyssinia where the latest arrivals in the flow of native deserters to Haile Selassie include 400 colonial troops. The Duke of Aosta escaped from Dessie to Ambialagi in the sole remaining Italian bomber. The mountains around Dessie arc honeycombed with eaves in which are hidden great stores of food, fuel and ammunition. One brigade of attackers fought twelve battalions, mainly Europeans. and captured 44 guns. South African artillery was engaged in an intense action for six days. EGYPTIAN POLITICS STABLE.
A Cairo message states that King Farouk gave an audience to Sirry Pasha and also the leaders of the Wafd, Saadist. and Liberal parties. The Egyptian Press forecasts the early formation of a National Government. The political atmosphere is more stable than for some time past. Sirry Pasha told the Press that the British troops and the R.A.F. were dealing effectivclv with the invaders.
