NAVAL PROMOTIONS

FORMER ACHILLES OFFICERS. (Press Assn.) AUCKLAND, April 29. Advice has been received in Auckland of the promotion of several Royal Navy officers who are well known in New Zealand. In promotion has been effective since the beginning of the year. Commander D. M. L. Neanie, who was decorated with the Distinguished Service Order following the Battle of the River Plate, when he was executive officer of HALS. Achilles, has been promoted to - the rank of captain. Lieut.-Commander Dawney, M.V.0., who also came to the New Zealand Squadron in the Achilles, has been promoted to commander. His wife, Lady Angela Dawney, is a sister of the Duchess of Gloucester. Another promotion is that of Paymaster-Lieutenant-Commander J. H. Highton to the rank of paymaster-com-mander. He served in New Zealand for several years as secretary to RearAdmiral Hon. E. 11. Drummond, then commanding the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy.
