R.A.F. OFFENSIVE

VARIETY OF OPERATIONS. (United Press Association —Copyright) (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 1.45 p.m.) RUGBY, April 29. The operations of the Fighter Command to-day included shipping protection patrols, offensive sweeps over the coast of Northern France, and escorting British bombers which made a lowIcvel attack on enemy shipping off Dunkirk. Four enemy ships were encountered north of Dunkirk and bombed and machine-gunned despite thick cloud and rain. As the bombers turned lor homo a number of Messerschmitts tried to intercept them, but were beaten off by the lighter escort. Spitfires from another squadron on patrol over the Straits of Dover encountered a number of German fighters and a “dog fight” ended in the Germans quickly disappearing in the cloud. As one pilot said: “Although wo did not see any of them crash, some were damaged and we were left cock of the walk.” One of the two bombers shot down by anti-aircraft guns in the Plymouth raid crashed into the sea only 200 yards from the shore.
