MUNICIPAL LIBRARY

Farther substantial progress by the city library in all departments is recorded in the annual report of the librarian (Mr H. Greenwood) presented to the City Council this week. At the beginning of the year the total membership was 7140 and at the end 9699, an increase of 2559. The book issues increased, similarly, by 62,746. In the senior department the fiction section was overhauled and a large number of old and worn-out books withdrawn. Although the class was smaller by about 1000 volumes the issues showed an increase of 5000. In the non-fiction section the issues increased by 3216. Many valuable books were added to the reference section and it was now in a better position to cope with the ever-growing number of requests for information. The report recorded a nett increase in the membership of the junior department of 579, making the total membership 2582. The book issues increased by 16,532 to a total of 58,038. In the rental department the total membership was 3942, and the book issues increased by 32,079 to reach a total of 154,493.
