ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH

MEETING OF PARISHIONERS. RECORD MISSION CONTRIBUTION Tlio annual meeting of parishioners of All foamls’ Uuurcn was held last nigiit, Uio vicar (Rev. Canon G. V A\ ooclwarcl) presiding over a good attendance. The various reports and statements presented reflected the nourishing condition of the parish over the last year. In Ins report the vicar comprehensively reviewed activities. He expressed gratiiieation that congregations had increased m number and y.'lendantes at the early .Eucharist had beer, well maintained. It had led all to take a more serious view of life and to lind our strength and stay in the Church of God. Church statistics were as follow, with the previous year's in parentheses : —Baptisms, 165 (137); funerals, bo (73); marriages, 1)0 (117); Melanesian Mission collection, £192 17s 7d (£73 12s 3d); golden offering, £313 9s (£233 7s Id); candidates confirmed, 9S (65); general collections, £944 Os 2d (£713 7s 2d); special collections, £332 2s lid (£322 bs sd). Taking the Board of Missions year as ending on June 30, the church contributed £237 7s, a record for the parish. This year, at June 30, the church would contribute £350. or perhaps more, a timely, splendid and magnificent record. In November last Rev. G. AV. Davidson resigned his part-time curacy because of i 11health ; he did good work in the country districts, particularly Longburn. Rev. D. V. de Candole was doing a real and lasting work among the young people. Rev. H. E. Wilson had taken over Takaro and had done much lor that populated district. This year the Ladies’ Guild had realised its dream of paying off the vicarage debt. The Mothers’ Union branch had oeen most successful and the number of ns members had increased considerably. The activities of the Girls’ Club, district visitors, Men's Club, choir, Air J. Holmes Runnicles (organist), who has given 25 years of constant and faithful service, Boy Scouts, Cubs and Rangers, Altar Guild, servers and decorators, lay readers, Missionary Guild. Bible classes and Sundayschools, and the vestry and churchwardens, all of which showed a successful year’s work, wero reviewed. The vicar concluded: “So we lace another year. What is to come in the months ahead none can say. Ail we can do is to remember we a>e British, and as Britishers know nothing of defeat. Using the means of grace Cod gives up in His Holy Church we shall brace ourselves to endure as soldiers of the cross the tragedies of war, confident that in the end God will (Mend the right and in His own good time crown our labours with victory. Into His most gracious keeping wo commend our Empire and those near and dear to us trusting with an vnswerving faith that in His strong hand all will be well.” The report of the churchwardens said that the annual statement of accounts disclosed a satisfactory financial position. Revenue totalled £I6OO lGs sd, a balance of 3s Id over the expenditure. There was a balance of £36 13s 9d of assets (totalling £558 Gs 4d) over liabilities. Since the closing of the accounts a further sum of £IOO had been received from an anonymous donor towards the reredos fund. In presenting the report, Mr H. G. Bagnall mentioned that the church was free of debt for the first time in his association with the parish, this statement being greeted with applause. Air Runnicles, in moving the adoption of the report, warmly congratulated Air Bagnall, whom he described as “a wizard of finance,” and the congregation on their part in the result. The action of the vestr.v in lotting contracts to the total of £l9O lor repairs to various church buildings was confirmed. Air 0. Alonrad was appointed by the vicar to be his warden for a further term and Air H. G. Bagnall was unanimously re-elected people’s warden. The following were declared elected to the vestry: Messrs J. H. L. Callis, L. Tucker, (J. TI. Handley, C. G. Langridge, L. AI. Abraham, T. R. Lees, J. Tait, E. AVhiteombe, and Alajor J. J'. Bosworth; synodsmen, Alessrs C. H. Handley and E. AVhiteombe. g The vicar announced that the anonymous donor to the reredos fund. had offered to give £IOO more if the bal- h ance of the money required was raised I by cash subscriptions only within 12 months. It was decided, on the motion of Alessrs A. E. Alansford and D. J. Rodgers, to use stone as the material lor the reredos and side panels, an’d to proceed with the project when another £IOO is received towards the fund. The reredos is to be a memorial to Rev. H. G. Kosher, a former vicar. Alcmbcrs were in favour of “The Last Supper” as the central design. Rev. D. de' Candole presented the Sunday school report and balance-sheet, saying that the year had been a fairly successful one. A new intermediate department had been started. He made an appeal for support for the children’s week to be held in June. It was decided to give half the offertories at the services next Sunday to the Bible-in-Sehools League, following an appeal by the Bishop of AVellington. Appreciation was expressed at the generosity of Mrs C. L. Brown in offering a house for the use of curates, and an° appeal was made for assistance in furnishing it. Votes of thanks were expressed to Air de Candole and the Sunday School staff, to the vicar and curates, to Air Runnicles and the choir.

CHILDREN’S HOME. Before the meeting of parishioners, tlie annual meeting of the All Saints’ Children’s Home . was held, Canon Woodward presiding. The report, which was adopted, said that the year had been one of steady progress and the home had been generously supported by its many friends. The matron had given of her best throughout a year full of arduous duties. One eventful occasion was the receiving of evacuated British children a few days before they were distributed to private homes. The report placed on record the many years of faithful service and generous support rendered by Mrs A. Robinson, who had retired from the ladies’ committee. Miss Whyte, secretary of the ladies’ committee, was thanked lor her constant and zealous work. Special mention was made of 1 numerous friends and helpers of the home. Regret was expressed that Mr C. H. Handley had resigned from the secretaryship after ia lengthy period of useful service. Both Mr and Airs Handley had been good friends to the children, it was stated, providing them with parties and other good things. Appreciation of Mr Handley’s services was placed on record. The balance-sheet showed a balance of £7812 7s 2d of assets (which totalled £7‘J73 ICs (id) over liabilities. The excess of receipts over expenditure for the year was £ll7 11s 4d. Last year’s trustees were re-elected and the following additional officers were appointed: Hon. secretary, Air L. Cal 1 is; hon. treasurer. Air H. G. Bagnall; hon. solicitor, Air L. At. Abraham; hon. physician, Dr. F. Ward; hon. auditor, Mr AV. T. Penny. Canon Woodward offered his personal thanks for the help given so generously to the home throughout the years by the citizens of Palmerston North. 1
