HALCOMBE
A the annual meeting of the llalcombe branch ol Clio U.S.A. the balance-sheet disclosed a healthy position. A review of ' the past year's activities revealed that the association was continuing to assist ex-servicemen and their dependents in a worthwhile manner. The names ot Messrs E. VV. Cowdrcy and R. U. .burgess were submitted for the office ol president and in the ensuing ballot Mr Cowdrcy wa.« elected lor the second successive year. Mr Burgess will hold the office of vice-pro- . sident, and those elected to the eommiUeo I arc: Messrs A. E. Prior, N. E. Ash- j worth, R. L. Ferguson, A. C. Boswell and . M. D. James; Mr R. D. Elgar was reelcatcd secretary and Mr j. O'&ullivan , will undertake the audit. J\lr Burgess wns appointed delegate (o the Feilding association. It is hoped that, in the near future llalcombe will bo included in tho visiting itinerary of Hon. W. Perry. The j re-painting ot the names on the sol- ! diers' memorial is to be undertaken at ai> early date. There was a record sale of poppies this year, the sum of £2l being collected. I 'lhe Anzac Day service was largely at- | tended. Ex-servicemen paraded at • the school, and, led by Mr E. \Y. Cowdrey. marched to the Jubilee Hall, where tin' service was conducted by Colonel D. Macau ley (Salvation Army). Mrs R. 0 Burgess w : as organist and solos were rendered by Mrs D. N. Gill, feilding. Prayers wore offered by Mr Gill and an appropriate scriptural passage was read by Mr 11. J. Down. Colonel Macauley do livcred an interesting address in the course of which lie paid tribute to those Anzaes who had made the supreme sacrifice in. a memorable effort to maintain the ideals of Democracy. At the conclusion of the service those present gathered at the memorial, where "Abide With Me" was sung, various wreaths were laid and the Last Post sounded. The Women's Patriotic Committee report that during April the following knit- j ted goods were forwarded to Zone E headquarters, Feilding:—Two pullovers, 5 j balaclavas, 5 scarves. Goods forwarded by j tho Stanway Sewing Guild were: Six i scarves, 3 pairs of socks, 1 pair mittens, 1 balaclava. A set, of knitted comforts was presented to Aircraftsman A. Lord on the*occasion of a complimentary funr tion. In the sewing section many garments were distributed to be repaired, and peggy squares, knitted by the llalcombe schoolgirls and members- of tho committee, were taken by Sirs A. Schaercn, who under, took to mako them into bedcovers.
