CONCERN CAUSED.
among southland farmers. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, March 24. Total prohibition on killing of ewes and wethers at freezing works is expected to have a more serious cnect in Southland than in other parts of New Zealand, particularly the North Island. The season has several months yet to run, aud sheep killings have not yet reached half of those expected, m a normal season. Southland freezing companies had already found it necessary to stop killing ewes and wethers, because of the acute shortage of storage space. This cessation of killings just at the period when killings ol ewes and wethers are normally at their height, was accepted philosophically by farmers of the province as a. temporary measure, but the Minister s statement has caused considerable concern, as farmers do not yet know whether ewes and wethers, now in prime condition, will be accepted lor killing latci m the season. Holding of stock ready for drafting will make inroads into reserves of winter and spring feed. Every effort should be made to continue the hobby calf pool in Southland, though export of boneless veal to Great Britain had been prohibited. This opinion was expressed to-night by Mr G. R. Herron, chairman of the Calf Pool Committee of the South Island Dairy Association.
