FREEZING COMPANIES.
1 INDUCED KILLINGS
WELLINGTON, March 24
“Wc have just got to carry out the instructions that the Government gives us,” said a freezing company official, when asked to comment on the restrictions placed by the Government on the acceptance of stock for freezing for export. “Actually. we know no more than the average person. My own opinion is that this is to give the Government a breathing space to sec what programme is to he decided upon. We anticipate this much difficulty, that the restrictions will reduce killings immediately, and that is likely to he a complex' matter, particularly a,s wc believe the normal killings will have to he carried out. “The Government says that it will take from the producer the whole of his production at prices reasonably equivalent to normal prices. That means that it is just postponing the killing of certain classes of stock. In the meantime, 1 think that most plants will find they have quite enough to do killing lambs. Tn some works, of course, killings will have to be reduced because they have reached the point where their stores are almost full and they will have to clear them before tloinr any further killings.” 'l’he official added that the obvious thing to do was to kill the animal that would go back in condition quickly, and that was the lamb.
