COMPANIES' GOOD YEAR.

PROFITS FROM AIRCRAFT. LONDON, March 22. Most companies engaged in the heavy industry bad a good year .in 1940 Cammell Laird, the English Steel Cdporation, Hadfields, and Baldwins all show satisfactory profits. Aircraft companies have also done well, De Havilland profits showing a sensational jump of £55,706 to Sim,923. The chairman's .speech says tliat their companies in Cimada, India, Australia and New Zealand engaged in tlm national war effort made profits except in New Zealand, which started only last year. . . The Government's decision to allow the conversion of home corporation loans carrying interest exceeding 4 per cent, has been welcomed by many corporations which have suffered through evacuation and other war difficulties. The Liverpool cotton market will cease to exist on March 31, the Ministry of Supply thereafter taking over distribution. Thus only two commodities, tin and rubber, retain a free market. The Financial News says that the organisation for the importation and distribution of these commodities lias functioned smoothly in recent months and there is no reason to suppose that the authorities have any designs on these markets.
