The Feilding Jockey Club was thanked for facilitating the removal of hodges and trees on Kowhai Park on the site-,from which a cottage was removed. The widening of the gateway and road at the entrance to the. cemetery was tho subject of an estimate given by the borough onginenr (Mr T. K, lfay), who considered that improvements would cost £lls. Mr Hay said that the owner of the adjacent property had intimated that there would be no compensation claim for land required to carry out the improvements. The matter is to ho considered when next year’s estimates aro being framed. It was stated that sufficient funds to enable the sealing of Aorangi and Monmouth Streets wore available. A petition from ratepayers in Gladstone Street for the scaling of that street was referred to flic, works committee, councillors agreeing that there was an abnormal amount of iorry traffic in the street. The borough engineer reported that the general sealing programme had been completed within the estimates und the Mayor complimented him on the very satisfactory position existing. Or. Dewe said that doing tho work by contract was a wise move and had resulted in the expeditious completion of the work-' It also had saved the council tho carrying of a lot of plant which would be idle for some months of tho year. A verbal report on the Municipal Conference was made by tho Mayor, who explained the values and virtues of remits adopted. Gr. McCorkindalc congratulated the ]V.»iytir on his elevation to tho vicepresidency of the Municipal Association, stating that the honour was one of which the council was proud. If unlimited sterling funds wero available to the Country Library Service while booksellers were restricted it would amount to State monopoly and be grossly unfair to local industries, said the Mayor, who ‘referred to a remark made by Gr. Guy that there was no restriction placed on the Country Library Service as iar as its importation of books was concerned. Gr. McClure, however, stated that the booksellers had to purchase books which cold icaddy on account of restrictions, but tho Country Library Service, which did not have to concentrate on quick sellers, was free to purchase other books. The Mayor said that Gr. McClure's explanation had _ placed a different complexion on tho subject. Comment on the amount of revenue derived from tlie pay section of the public library was made by Gr. McCorkindale, who said that tho £6 shown in the librarian’s report represented only 3d per- reader. The number of books changed, however, showed that the public was making full use of fe free section. COUNCILLOR SUSPENDED.

Gr Guy referred to the need for tho con servation of electricity in the Dominion and asked if the council could follow Palmerston North’s action in restricting its streot lighting. The Mayor replied. that, possibly something could be done in the matter, but that tho Chamber of Commerce should be consulted before any action was taken. Out of common courtesy it was desirable that the chamber bo given an opportunity to confer with the council. Several councillors agreed that the Mayor’s suggestion was the correct procedure, Gr Buist stating that no doubt the chamber would be sympathetic and ready to assist and would appreciate an opportunity of giving its support. Gr Guy said he could not see why the chamber should ho drawn into tho matter, and asked that the council act on its own initiative.

This the Mayor opposed and subsequently the Mayor cautioned Gr Guy that lie was beginning to resent the latter’s remarks. A motion that the Mayor, town clerk and the president of the Chamber of Commerce confer on the matter was moved, whereupon Cr Guy rose to speak again. The Mayor declined to allow Cr Guy to speak. Gr Guy: This is a gagged outfit. The Mayor then asserted Ill's rights under the standing orders and ordered Cr Guy to leave the council chamber. This Gr Guy refused to do, and _ he challenged the Mayor to get the police to remove him. Cr Guy was then suspended for the remainder of the meeting and was precluded from voting on the motion, which was carried, all other councillors voting in favour of it. GENERAL NEWS.
