GOLF

MANAWATU CLUB. The season of the Manawatu Golf Club closed at Hokowhitu on Saturday with a mixed foursome, for which there was a large entry, and tho presentation of prizes. The weather was fine. F. N. Andrews and Mrs Illston | won tho foursome, next being Harding and Mrs Harding. The leading cards were: —Andrews and Mrs Illston, 91—20—71; Harding and Mrs Harding, 85—13 —72; J. C. Hill and Mrs Hill, 91—18—73; A. Seifert and Miss Illston, 83—9 —74; N. 1 Mabey and Mrs Cliff, 83 —8—75: J. Graham and Miss Haggitt, 94—19—75; A. J. M. Goodwin and Mrs Eliott, 90 —■ 14 —70; J. M. Taylor and Mies ltediwood, 92—16—76; L. Sinclair and Mrs 1 Mitchell, 99—23—76; R. Duncalf and Miss N. Smillie, 85 —8—77. Members and visitors assembled- at the club-house at afternoon tea for the official closing of the season. The president (Mr B. E. Keiller) said that the club had had a very satisfactory year, considering the conditions obtaining. The club was one of the oldest in the country and had for 42 years been occupying its own property. He called on members to support the club to the utmost of their ability. The club was indebted to Mr T. H. Horton, head research officer of the Dominion Golf Council, for his valuable assistance to the" club in the work on the greens, and to the club’s professional (Mr J. R. Galloway) for the work lie had done during the year; his interest in the club had been very great. The greenkeeper, Mr Mclntyre, had kept the grounds in exceptionally good order with quite a small staff. Air Keiller also thanked Mrs Chatfield for the way in which she had catered for members and yisitors. He congratulated the prize-winners and commented that the prizes were very evenly distributed. Prizes were then presented by Mrs Keiller, the winners being: Club championship: A. M. Johns, runnerup K. G. Fletcher. Middleweight championship: D. W. Spring; runner-up, R. W. Priest. Junior championship : K. Christmas; runner-up, C. Harris. McLennan Cup: F. Guinness and D. G. Lcng-Ward; runnersup, K. Glcndinning and W. W. Smith. B. and A. -Cup: J. Cowan; runner-up, N. A. Nash. Veterans’ Cup: P. C. Mildon ; runner-up, W. L. Fitzherbert, Nathan Cup; R. L. Harding (298). Lionel AbVabam Cup: J. Cowan. Barraud Service Cup: E. R. Chapman and M. B. Osborne, each 2 down, a tie. McHardy Cup (stroke, A grade) : A. C. Cliff' and G. A. Robertson. 6 points, a tie. Druce Cup (stroke, B grade) : O. A. Collis, 11 points. Plunket Cup (beg.-y A grade) : M. A. Ongley, 8J points.
