ROSE SHOW

FINE DISPLAY MADE. GREAT VARIETY OF BLOOMS. Despite the fact that the season has not been a favourable one for roses, there was a fine display at the Palmerston North Horticultural Society’s ltoso Show, held in the Empire Hali on baturday. The wind has played havoc in some gardens, with the larger blooms particularly, while the recent rain added to prospective exhibitors’ troubles. The decorative section was particularly strong and brought forward some exceptionally fine work. In the remainder of the show, the entric- were good and the hall presented ■ a particularly pleasing picture, one of the features being the displays made by the delphiniums and Russell lupins, whose spikes of flowers were arresting. In the Iceland poppy section there was good representation of the giant varieties in their numerous colours The show was declared open by Mr J. A. Nash, patron of the society. Ho was introduced by Mr A. AY. Just, tho, chairman of the committee, who ex-j -pressed regret that Mrs Nash was indisposed. . _ I Mr referring to the war, said | the successes secured by the British surely showed that we would have vie- ' tory. The people must “carry on” now; and, above ail, be cheerful. The Hor-; ticuitural Society had not lessened its activities in any way, and the fine show presented was further evidence of that. There had probably never been a better rose show than this one, which had been'favoured by excellent; growth in the rose gardens. There were, three filings in life which delighted all people—children, which were one of the |greatest blessings of God; flowers, which made us happ.v; and music, which makes us cheerful. Mr Nash concluded by praising the work’ of Mr Just and that of the secretary (Mr A. J. Galiand). and said it was the duty j of citizens to support the society bv their membership in tho great work it was doing. The patron announced that the Mrs F. J. Nathan Cup (for one rose) had been won by Airs C. C. Aikman (Russell Street) and the Nurserymen’s Trophy (for six roses) by the same exhibitor. Mrs Aikman won both trophies last year also. Tho judges were: Roses, Mr A. J. Shaker; cue blooms, Mr .15. Sweetman; fruit and vegetables, Mr A. W. Just; and decorative, Mrs J. Mason (Fcilding). The stewards were Messrs F. H. Poole, Adamson, W.
