WAR DIARY.
WEEK'S MAIN EVENTS. A feature of the war news this week has been a slackening of the German raids on Britain despite the vigorous and unrelenting British air offensive on military objectives in Germany. Highlights of the news are as follow : October 19.—Wide air attacks on Germany despite adverse weather conditions, Heavy raid on London. October 20. —British long-range guns maintain heavy bombardment across Straits of Dover. Italians show signs of activity in Western Desert —patrols heavily battered by British artillery and aircraft. Fleet Air Arm attacks German seaplane base at Tromso (NorW October 21.—Heart of Berlin, also targets in Milan and Turin, heavily raided by R.A.F. In broadcast address t 0 France Mr Churchill appeals to Frenchmen not to hinder, if they cannot help, Britain, and promises share in final victory over Nazism. October 22.—Hamburg shipyards crippled in fierce R.A.F. attack. In lied Sea British cruiser Kimberley destroys Italian destroyer Francesco Nullo Laval meets Hitler in France; reported Nazi pressure for Vichy to declare war on Britain. War. Council formed in Australia, overcoming political deadlock. October 23.—Fu1l story of disorganisation of Nazi invasion plans by bombing of Channel ports revealed. Hitler confers with General I<ran,co on Spanish border. ■October 24.—Hitler meets General Franco 'in France in apparent effort to involve Spain in war. British aircraft torpedoes two German supply ships off Frisian Islands.
