NAZI DESIGNS
NEW EUROPEAN ORDER. SPAIN'S FIRM TONE. LONDON, Oct. 25. Marshal Petain has returned to Vichy after his conversations with Hitler. The French Cabinet is expected to meet to-morrow. The official communique merely states that Marshal Petain has returned "after visiting several regions in occupied France." The Nazis hint at what they call the new European order from which the nightmare of foreign interference will be expelled. Clearly Hitler's latest search for new allies is not going to arrive at an easy conclusion.
A Moscow radio report states that among -the demands by. Germany are control of the Channel coast as far as Boulogne; the cession of Alsace and Lorraine, also Morocco; the surrender of the Alpes Mantimes, Nine, Corsica and Tunis to Italy; and the surrender of the Pyrenees to Spain.
M. Laval to-day conferred with the Italian Foreign Minister (Count Ciano.) Rome circles indicate further negotiations between Italy and Germany. The general opinion seems to be that, whatever Hitler desires, he will have difficulty.in getting it. A Spanish spokesman today reaffirmed that Snain wants to keep out of the war and to keep on good terms with her friends.
Reports in United States newspapers confirm the drastic nature of Hitler s demands, but others indicate that they may have since been reduced. President Roosevelt told a Press conference that the United States still regards France as a friendly nation regardless of the meeting between Hitler and Marshal Petain.
