GENERAL NEWS.

CRICKET. Cricketers in Feilding have made arrangements for games to he played to-day and Monday afternoon at Centennial Kowhai Park. Late Frost. Considerable damage was done by a late frost which was experienced this morning, and tomato and potato plants suffered. One commercial grower of tomatoes stated to-day that ho had lost 1000 dozen plants. Boy Scouts.

The Kowhai Boy Scout troop met this week when the roll books were marked and the troop paraded in patrols for inspection. Second-class ambulance work was done, following which games were, indulged in and finally a Court of Honour was held.

Free Library Service. Increased interest in the free library service is being shown and the lrlimber of registrations has now reached 300, which is greatly in excess of the number of subscription members under the paid system. Yesterday tho librarian (Mr 11. W .H. Wood) issued 180 books, this number being a record for one clay. Catering For Literary Tastes. The work of the field librarian of the Country Library Service (Mr N. EL Buchanan) takes him from Wellington to Kaitaia in the north three times a year in a van carrying 1200 books, which are estimated to meet the requirements of all readers. He visits 100 libraries in each trip and is at present in Feilding, where he will change books at the local library. Mr Buchanan stated that libraries have been established at Rongotea, Ashhurst, Pohangina, Kimbolton, Apiti, Rangiwahia, Bulls, and Waituna. At these centres 50 books are supplied and changed every four months. Mr Buchanan will be 'back in Feilding in February. He states that the free service is growing rapidly and keen interest is being shown in the country towns mentioned.

Auction Mart. Prices for poultry and pigs realised at the Feilding auction mart yesterday are as follow:—Poultry: Hens, 2s 3d to 4s lid; cockerels, 3s to 4s 9d; cockerel chicks, Is 9d; ducks, 2s sd; hen and 11 chicks, 16s. Pigs: Best weancrs, £1 to £1 8s; small, 14s to 18e 6d; slips, £1 14s; stores, £1 Us 6d to' £1 17s 6d.
