(From Our Own Correspondent.) _ STANWAY, Oct. 24. The Women’s Institute celebrated its eighth birthday recently, Miss M. V. Clere presiding. The junior members had given the hall a festive appearance with spring flowers and feathery bamboo. A birthday book in the form of a visitors’ book was presented to the institute by Mrs Evercd, to whom a vote of thanks was accorded. Forty names were entered in (ho book during tho afternoon. Miss Clere thanked all members who had helped with donations for the soldiers’ Christmas parcels and those ladies who had packed them; also Prudence Winder for her donation, which had enabled the institute to send parcel to the nursds serving overseas. Notice was given that IDs had been collected for the lepers by Mrs A. Marshall and further donations were promised. It was decided also that instead of selling the library books that had been in circulation for some timo these would bo forwarded to Feilding for reading for the soldiers.. All members were especially asked to join in the competition for the November meeting, a patchwork cot cover (lyd by liyds) or a plain cot cover, these to be forwarded later to the Lady Galway Guild. Mrs W. Baker, senr.. of Makino, presented money boxes to the two new institute babies. Baby Winder and Baby Jefferies. Mrs Baker appealed to members to help with calendar wrappings by saving clean brow;n paper and forwarding it to the federation secretary and also for donations of scraps of waterproof oiled skin from old coats and leggings, these scraps to be used in the making of gauntlets for tho men on minesweepers. Miss Clero presented the prizes won in competitions during the year, the winners being: Arts and crafts, Miss J. Rosser 1, Mrs M. Lcct and Miss M. Clere, equal, 2; other prizes in this section were won by Mesdames Rosser, Harvey, Lcct, Cole, Maefarlane, K. Anderson, and Misses Clere, I. Craine, and J. Rosser; cooking, Miss R. Marshall 1, Miss Z. Jefferies 2; bloom, Mrs Rosser 1, Mrs I. Marshall and Miss Clere, equal, 2. Those present were entertained by the junior members with items i and competitions. A parcel competition 'was won by Mrs S. Jones. Songs were rendered by Miss L. Prior and Miss G. Marshall; a song and ballet, “An Apple i for the Teachot,” was particularly well j done, the girk appearing in smart cosI tumes, of cream and green with touches of gold, those taking part being Misses J. Rosser, J. Groves, G. Marshall, J. Christian and .N. and Z. Jefferies. A further competition was won by Mrs Schaercn, of Halcombe. An amusing playette was also given by two members of the drama circle, Misses J. Groves and J. Rosser, who were warmly applauded. Afternoon tea was served by the members of tho committee, following which the ceremony, of lighting the candles and cutting the birthday cake, which had been made by Mrs V. B. Short and iced by Miss J. Rosser, took place Mrs I. Marshall, as the oldest member of the institute, lit the candles, and tho youngest member, Miss G. Marshall, extinguished them. The following ladies helped with tho cutting of the cake, at the same time extending birthday greetings from the institutes they represented: Mesdames W. Baker (Makino), E, Pearc-e (Waituria West), Prior (Tokorangi), O’Sullivan (Halcombe), and Brett (Halcombe W.D.F.U.). Miss J. Rosser, on behalf of tho junior members, asked Miss M. Dermer to accept a posy in appreciation of her work in training the girls for their ballet. A further competition was won by Miss B. Prior, the prize being a pretty linen cloth trimmed with hand-made tatting, made and donated to the institute by Master Gordon Hooper. The monthly competitions were won by the following: Nut loaf, Mrs J. Macfarlano 1, Miss Z. Jefferies 2; bloom, Mrs R. Cockburn 1, Miss J. Rosser 2; howl of flowers, Mrs W. Harvey L Miss Clere 2.
