RUGBY, Oct. 22. Further gifts toward the Empire war effort include a cheque for £IOO,OOO from the Sultan of Johore, representing a 10-year loan free of interest, an offer of £IOO,OOO from the paramount chief of Basutoland and the Basutoland Council, and contributions totalling £4913 from" Tonga for the purchase of a fighter plane which, with Queen Salote's consent, will bear her name. Queen Salote has also headed a scheme whereby £678 a year will be paid in monthly instalments. The Mayor and citizens of Greater Victoria have cabled £3900 to the Lord Mayor of London's air raid distress fund. "The spirit of London is the spirit of the Empire," the cable stated, "and compels the admiration of free men the world over." The National Savings Committee has announced that Liverpool raised £11,808.741, equivalent to £l4 2s 3d a head of population,- during "war weapons ween."
