TALK ON MAORI RACE

Alembers of the Alanawatu branch of tho Women Teachers’ Association

held their last social gathering lor the year at Alessrs Collinson and Uunningliame’s, yesterday arternoon. Airs JWalker presided and the speaker was Air J. H. Stevens, iv'ho gave reminiscences of the Alaoris, tracing their origin and giving instances to show their ancient knowledge of the stars. He spoke of their worship, which was always carried out in perfect silence, and- told something ot Alaori burial customs, also dealing a little with the language, curious apnorisms and translations of familiar words. i Aliss Al. Goaiiell thanked the speaker, her remarks being endorsed by the president. Airs Walker also took the opportunity ot thanking the members lor their attendance throughout the year and expressed gratification to the speakers for their service in providing sources of interest and pleasure at the meetings. She also thanked Airs Coates and her staff for their kindly offices and courtesy, the Press, and Aliss Gosneli for the capable way in which she had carried out her duties as secretary. Aliss Gills reported on the meeting of .delegates to elect a committee ior the Women’s AVar Service Auxiliary, mentioning that she had been impressed with the evidence of the desire of the women’s organisations cooperate to the best of their ability, and her pleasure in reporting that Airs Walker had been elected to the committee. Congratulations -were extended to Airs Walker and the committee s action in making nominations was endorsed.
