ASHHURST.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) ASHHURST, Oct. 1. On Saturday evening Hie local Patriotic Committee held a function in the halt and the opportunity was taken to bid farewell and a safe return to Sergt-Gunner man Maul, R.N.Z.A.F., who is shortly leaving for service overseas. The chairman (Mr M. Murpliy) called on tho guest of honour to accept a small gift from the Ashhurst people as. a token of the esteem in Which he is held. Mr Murphy spoke of the great work being performed by the R.A.F. and stated that one and all knew Sergeant Maul would uphold the traditions of the Air Force. The _ recipient thanked the chairman for his remarks and. the people of Ashhurst for their kindly thoughts. There was a very large attendance. The winners of tho card games were Mrs Cook and Mr 11. Woodroofo. Another competition was won by Miss P. Stephens. The floor was in good order for dancing. This function is the final of the first series of farewell and patriotic ovenand the net proceeds are now between £45 and £SO. A new senes of gatherings will commence shortly and full particulars are to bo advertised. Messrs G. Bleaklcy and W. Peck have willingly assisted the committee as doorkeepers. Ilia M.C. was Mr A. Stephens, and Mr W. Muldrock had charge of the card section. The ladies of the Women’s Institute have had charge of the supper arrangements and their help has been greatly appreciated.

A kitchen evening was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs W. Gay, of Napier Road, in honour of Miss Esyla Mclsaae, of Bourke Street, Palmerston North, who is shortly to bo married. Until recently, Miss Mcisaac has resided in Ashhurst for tho past five years and has made many friends. Games and competition were enjoyed; piano-accordion items were Tendered by Mr B. Gaillard; and competitions were won by Miss Mcisaac and Mr R. Davis. A parcel game was also won by Miss Mcisaac. Mr Davis asked the guest of honour to open tho gifts and wished her well Among those present were : Miss E. Mcisaac. the host and hostess, Mcsdames G. Mcisaac, R. Harper, Gaillard, A. Maunder, I. Boyd, R. Davis, Misses N. Mcisaac, Iv. Brewer and L. Gay, Messrs Maunder, Harper, Mcisaac. Iv. Townshend, R. Davis, B. Gaillard and Gaillard, senr.

Miss Kathleen Littlejohn, of Palmerston North, is the guest of Mrs C. Brewer, Feilding Road. The residents of the Ashhurst district will regret to hear of the death of Pilot-Officer Eric Orgias, during air operations abroad. Pilot-Officer Orgias was an old pupil of the Ashhurst School. His parents: are; woll-known to the local residents, who (sympathise with them’ in their sad bereavement.
