A VARIED PROGRAMME

The first season in which educational films have been shown m Palmerston North closed, last night, when the Little Theatre was crowded tor the presentation. The programme was arranged by Mr Salmon cl, of the Dominion Museum, Wellington, m conjunction with the Palmerston North Library Extension Service. The showing of .the films here has proved a successful experiment, and the programme last night consisted of pictures splendidly made, dealing witii natural and | scientific wonders. The first film dealt with gliding, revealing its excitements, accidents and achievements, and the valuable knowledge being amassed on the subject. The second film, on the subject of I sound, showed the anatomy of the ear and its sensitiveness, sound refractions, and explained the phenomenon of echoes. The advances made by electricity in recording sound waves and the developments therefrom were dealt with in the concluding parts of the film, A travel picture was ‘‘A Visit to Bali,” which described many interesting features of the island, including its ancient temples and religious ceremonies. The rice industry was also dealt with in detail, the picture revealing that the women of Bali seemed to have to do most of the work. Earthquakes in action and the geological consequences were dealt with in another film. A feature was an illust'ra- | tion of the method in which a seismo- j I graph Worked. A new instrument, ac-! | cording to the picture, was being made [ and would show when and where to j expect earthquakes. How research was | finding out the best type of buildings | to withstand earthquake shocks was | also shown in the picture. “Robin Redbreast,” a film which contained much t beautiful photography, showed robins, building their nests, hatching their \ eggs and feeding their young with 1 earthworms. Stages in the development of the young birds till they learned to | fly and finally migrated to the south, j were shown. “Weather Forecast” show- ] ed the way in which weather observa- | tions were made, and. an example of how a gale warning was received and given made a dramatic story.
