. PATRIOTIC SOCIETY. A meeting of the Patriotic Society was held on Thursday evening, there being present the Mayor (Mr R. R. Johnston) and Messrs H. G. Wickes. W. J. Hawkes, II "P. Home, F. D. Arising out of correspondence from the Southern Hawke's Bay Zone Patriotic Committee, the subject of Christinas■ ... parcels tor troops abroad was - discussed on lines set out in the communication, and the Mayor and secretary were authorised to order the quota (60), 'the cost being between £2O and £3O. A communication from the Department of Internal Affairs ' asked for a list of various sub-committees setup under the emergency precautions scheme for official recording. Mr 11. H. Little and Dr. P. H. Mules wero provisionally appointed for communications and ' Red Cross respectively. The secretary undertook to confirm all appointments and to comply with the requirements of the department. When the subject of food was being discussed in. relation to the emergency precautions machinery, Mr Leach stated that he and other farmers had increased their acreage of cultivation for that purpose and' he' advocated that vacant sections around the town be utilised.
