FOXTON.

The first honours board in connection with the Eoxlon men who have left for service overseas contains 29 names and is a fine piece of work. It was made by the workwood class at the secondary department of the Foxton District High School. The names were placed on the board by Mr J. Macdonald. The board is to lie erected in the vestibule of the Town Hall so that a permanent may be kept of all local men who serve m the war. Mrs R. Watkins, of Auckland, is the guest of her sister, Mrs R. N. Speirs, of Robinson Street. Mr W. G. Nye has been appointed secretary to the Foxton Patriotic Committee, vice Captain J. R. Middleton, who recently resigned. Miss M. Patterson, late of' the Foxton District High School, who has been a relieving teacher at Palmerston North, has been appointed infant mistress at Central School, Nelson, Mr D. R. Barron has been nominated by the Borough Council and has accepted the position of councillor, made vacant by the resignation of Captain J. R. Middleton. Mr Barron has seen previous service on the council. Members of the Beach Improvement Society recently carried out repairs to the tanks at the" hall and general improvements. The tennis courts were marked out preparatory to the forthcoming season. •

A gathering ot the Patriotic Bridge Club was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs M. E. /Perreau, of Lady’s Mile, tb<> hostesses being Mesdames Perreau and S. E. Cowley. The ladies’ points prize was won by Mrs V. E. Bryant and Captain J. R Middleton was the winner of the points’ prize for the men. Set up as a committee to undertake local organisation in connection with the possible arrival in Foxton ol some of the British children who may come to these shores. Messrs M. E. Perreau, and R. 0. Ilornhlow and Sister M. Little and Mrs E. Titcombc met this week and discussed preliminary arrangements. Four applications were received from local residents desirous of taking care of arrivals and it was decided to forward these to Zone E Committee, Feilding, to which the Foxton Committee is attached.
