MANAWATU CLUB

BOWLING, CROQUET AND TENNIS. PREPARATIONS FOR SEASON. Mr It. H. Billens presided at the annual meeting of tlio Manawatu Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club; last evening. There was a largo attendance. The annual report (already published), was adopted on the motion of Mr Billens, seconded by Mr R. B. Robertson.

A detailed account of the finances was presented by Mr H. Christinas, who stated that there was a credit balance of £36 on the year’s working. Tho election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr A. E. Mausford; president, Mr W. J: Veivin; vice-president, Mr R. B. Robertson; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr F. G. Opie; executive, Messrs E. H. King, TV. E. Winks and E. Beatson (bowling), Mesdames F. H. King, MacLeod and W. Turner (croquet), Messrs T. Worrall, P. Campbell and A. Taylor (tennis): finance committee, Messrs H. Christmas and Veivin.

Mr E. Bruco Levy was thanked for the work lio had carried out for the club on the greens during the winter months.

I 'The new president recalled that last year a membership committee was appointed and its members had worked hard for tho club. The same committee was appointed for the new season. In reference to proposed improvements to the pavilion, Mr J. W. Rutherfurd said that in the original lease there was no clause stating that the buildings had to bo painted. Mr Christmas suggested that if the club obtained tho paint a “working bee’’ might be arranged for tile painting of the building.

Mr Billens said the club was under an obligation to secure accommodation for the tennis section. He was of the opinion that the renovation of the building and the erection of an annexe for the tennis section should be considered together. Airs Fuller intimated that tho croquet section had collected a sum of money to help in the erection of the annexe.

Mr Billens moved that the executive bo empowered to erect a building for the tennis section and spend £2O for tho purpose. The motion was carried. Mr Worrall moved that Messrs D. Jones, W. Coekburn and D. Williams bo a sub-committee to go into the matter and this was agreed to.

Opening day was fixed for early in October, it wa6 decided not to invite visitors on opening day. The general secretary’s honorarium was fixed as the same as last year. Mr H. G. Mills expressed appreciation of the work of the retiring president and also thanked Mrs Gould for her work in the tearooms.

Mr Billens presented the certificates won during the season. It was decided to call the old green tho Spooner Green and the new green tho Gerrand Green, to mark the services given f>y two former presidents of the club, Messrs C. F. Spooner and J. B. Gerrand.
