GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Girls’ High School Parents’ Association was held in the school assembly hall this week, Mr T. P. Hart presiding over an attendance comfortably filling the hall. A letter was received from the Board of Governors thanking the association for donations of £lO for new library books, and £lO for gramophone records towards musical appreciation. The principal (Miss E. Stephens) handed in a cheque for £2O collected by the pupils for patriotic purposes. Congratulations on the excellent result of their effort was expressed by the meeting. As there was some doubt about the Patriotic Fund to which the girls wished to donate the money, the matter of payment was left over to the next meeting. After the formal business had been disposed of, the parents were entertained by the pupils and staff. The school orchestra, a new feature to the school, under Miss Hobson, made its first public appearance, and considering that it was only recently formed, j it showed promise and possibilities. I In a play from ‘‘Little Women,”* produced by Miss Scott, the third form girls entered into the spirit of Jo and her family with the troubles of housekeeping. This was well staged and interestingly played. The school choir, under Miss M. Dean, delighted the audience with the singing of songs by Mendelssohn, the effect being heightened by the girls being in Early Victorian dresses, the bright colours, flounces, and furbelows _ adding the visual period to the music. During the interlude another Mendelssohn number. ‘‘Had I the Wings,” was pleasingly sung by one of the pupils. Following out the Mendelssohn motif, the senior girls, under Miss Birnie and Miss Coates, produced scenes from Mendelssohn’s visit to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The parts were all well sustained, and with the beautiful music of the ‘‘Spring Song.” the proI duction was enthusiastically received. [ Thanks were expressed by Mr Hart for the entertainment.
