PAHIATUA.
At a farewell social function arranged by members of the local Firo Brigade there was a largo attendance to honour Lance-Corporal J. Ward, who was a member of the brigade prior to his entering camp. Items were rendered hv Messrs J. Hutchinson (vocal) and P. Staples (eloculionaryl. Other members of the Forces present were Private P. Neary, of Pahiatua, and Sergeant C. Ward, who resided in this district some years ago. In presenting Lance-Corporal Ward with a goldmounted fountain pen, suitably inscribed, as a token from his fellow firemen, Superintendent W. Lawr.v eulogised the services rendered to the brigade by the recipient. Other speakers were Mossrs E. 11. Lett (honorary members). W. A. Carthew (Fire Board), Deputy-Superintendent • R. Stokes, and Foreman T. Morgan. Lieutenant L. D. Lovelock, who has been attending officers’ classes in Wellington, is at present home on sick leave. Miss M. Boyd, of Wakeman STreet, Pahiatua, is spending a holiday with her sister in Auckland. Miss Margaret Stewart, of Ngaturi. passed with honours in the first steps of theory examination of Trinity College of London held recently. Lieutenant P. Hogan, of the Third Echelon, is visiting Pahiatua and is staying with Mrs Hogan, at the residence of Mr and Mrs E. Stevens, Main Street.
