OBITUARY

MR GEORGE H. LUCAS. There passed away a few days ago, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs J. T. Treinbath (Te Uoro), Mr George Henry Lucas, of Awahuri, at the age of 77 years. Born in Oxford, New Zealand, Mr Lucas was the son of the late George and Frances Lucas, and came to Awahuri at the age of nine years. He attended the first Maori schools at Carnarvon and Awahuri and became a blacksmith by trade. His many years of service in the community earned him much respect. He was one of the original members of the Ancient Order of Foresters, a supporter of defence and miniature rifle clubs, and a regular a.ttondcr at the Presbyterian Church. His marriage to Miss Janet Nairn took jriace at Awahuri, the children of the marriage being: Mesdames L. Watson (Ohau), A. Trembatl) (Levin), J. T. Trembath (Te Horo), W. Vincent (Awahuri). Messrs James and Herbert Lucas (both of Awahuri). To them the sympathy of many friends has been extended in their sudden bereavement. Mrs Lucas predeceased her husband six years ago. There are 25 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The funeral took place at the Sanson Cemetery, following a service at the residence conducted by Rev. J. W. Martin, Presbyterian minister. The nall-hearcrs at the residence were, Brothers W. Towler. J. Noble, J. K. j Worsfold, W. Pengelly. If. Bat ten and T. Rosanoski, of the Foresters’ Lodge, | those memlmrs having conducted -the funeral service of the lodge. At the cemetery the bearers wero Messrs K. and P. Lucas (brothers), 11. and J. Lucas (sous). W. Vincent and L. Watson (sons-in-law). The numerous wreaths included tokens from the A wall uri Dairv Co., Awahuri Ride Club. Awahuri Presbyterian Church, Awahuri Women’s Institute, Awahuri Hall Committee, Ancient Order of Foresters and the staff of the Awahuri Dairy Co.
