(From Our Own Correspondent.! APITJ, June 17. The monthly meetiiiK of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held reccnll.y when Mrs L. J. Ilodson presided. The meeting decided in favour of the conference being abandoned and the I)o* minion executive carrying on during the war period. Miss A. Ilodson received a dainty posy and birthday greetings. A social competition, arranged by Mrs . J. D. Kilgour, was won by-Mrs N. J. Viles. A humorous reading was given by Mrs Ilodson. The tea hostesses were Mesdaines Kilgour and Brazier, and Alb®” dames E. A. Payton and N. J. Viles judged the competitions. Results: Bloom, Mrs 11. C\. Mclntyre 1, Miss Patterson 2, (Mrs Jacob 6; vase of autumn leaves, Mrs J. B. Pettigrew 1, Mrs Kilgour 2, Mrs Mclntyre 3; eggless gingerbread, Mrs Mclntyre 1, Mrs Jacob 2; prettiest knitting bag, Mrs Jacob 1 and 3, Mrs M. Jacob 2. A letter of thanks is to be sent to Mr F. Mapson for typing the six months’ programme. A bring and buy stall in aid of the Red Cross appeal brought in a welcome contribution. In the recent golf putting competition Mrs Hooper won the prize given by Mrs f D. C. Bucknian. Arranged by the local Patriotic Coininittee, assisted by the Young Fanners’ Club, who staged a tug-o’-wa* exhibition, a most successful dance was held in aid of the Red Cross appeal. Mr J. R. Osborne was the M.C. and dancing was enjoyed for the first portion of the evening. There were nine local teams for the tug-o -war and a number of visiting teams. Among them were City (M. McKay, J. R. Osborne ,T Doughty, and R. Harland)-, Ironsides (E. Bielski, W. Wildbote, P. Wallace and another); Mountaineers, (D and E. Kearney, C. Eliot and K. Stanley) ; Southern (A. Cowan, E. Payton, C. Ilogan and R. Gallicr); Ridge Road (li. M. Mclntyre, S. Baker, R. Stewart and R. McNae); Makoura Road (S. Cook, M. Stewart, M. Curtz and another). The Southern team were the winners, with Ridge Road second. The prize money was generously donated by the teams to the funds. Mr Payton’s competition was won by Messrs M. McKay and A. W. Benseman. Mrs Alfred Prince’s cake was won by Mrs Hales. Another cake given by Mrs R. V. Stewart was won by Ned Smith and purchased later by Mr W. Duncan. Four eggs, which were bought and sold a number of times, reaiisod the sum of 18s. The takings for the evening amounted to £39 10s. Mr W. McKay (chairman of the Patriotic Committee) thanked the young farmers for their assistance and generous gesture. Many others, too, who had contributed to the success of the effort received a word of thanks. Those who lent their assistance for the making of sandwiches were: Mesdames L. J. Ilodson, S. F. Morris. A. E. Prujean, D. McNicol, C. M. Stanley, Misses’ Patterson and A. Ilodson, members of the Women’s Division and the Women’s Institute.
