HEREFORD CATTLE

DOMINION BREEDERS. YEAR OF PROGRESS. A successful year was reviewed at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Hereford Cattle Breeders’ Association yesterday. Mr A. S. Holmes, of Otago (South Island vice-president) was in the chair. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs E. W. Barnett (Halcombe), R. F. Hutchinson (Gisborne), A. Swift (Taihape) and D. Tynan (Te Anga, King Country). Feeling reference was made by the chairman to the late Mr H. B. Stuckey, whom he described as a good friend to the association and whose services would be greatly missed. The members stood in silence as a mark of respect. \ It was decided to send a letter ot sympathy and expressing hopes for speedy recovery from his illness to the president. Mr R. F. Hutchinson. “The financial position as disclosed by the accounts is satisfactory, although the revenue is less than last year’s by £ll 14s 3d,” stated the annual report. “The expenditure is less by £7 6s 3d, but it is pointed out that the costs of printing the herd book will probably be greater in the coming year. Tlie net profit on the year’s working is £SO 18s Id, a decrease on last year’s figures of £4 Bs, which must be considered satisfactory. Trophies and donations are higher by £8 Bs, while a full year on account of, office rent 'is charged as against a portion chargeable for the previous year. The accumulated fund now stands at £993 16s lid. Export certificates were issued during the year for two heifers and five bulls. These animals were exported to Australia. The membership now stands at 68, an increase of six.”

The report added that there were 1371 entries in volume 42 of the Herd Book, compared with 1417 in volume 41. Thanks were extended to the editing and executive committees, which had given considerable time and trouble to the association’s affairs. A trophy had been donated to the Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs to be awarded to the winner of the judging competition in the beef cattle classes at the Royal Show. It liad been decided that the, private brand number must be accepted for entry in future issues of the Herd Book. Mr F. E. Humphries (Gisborne) referred to the association’s successful year and said good quality Hereford cattle were bringing in good prices. One bull had realised £3OO and many stud bulls had realised three figures. Herefords had been responsible for the largest entries of any beef breed at three North Island shows —Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne. He considered breeders should do tlieir utmost to produce as much beef as possible for the British market and the fighting forces. He advised stationholders to huv the best available bulls for their herds. Mr E; H. Beamish (Hastings) saul alarm had lwen expressed by cattle breeders at the enormous numbers of stock in Hawke’s Bay going to the abattoirs before their due time. The prospects for the stud breeder were not improved bv this action. The sneaker approved the association’s action in donating a trophy to the young tampers’ clubs, which, he said, ■ deserved every encouragement. The election of officers resulted; President. Mr B. F. Hutchinson; treasurer. Mr E. E. Short (Feilding); auditor, Mr K. S. Glendinning; council, Messrs J. L. Macfarlane (Amuri). E. M. Cranstone (Forded), F. E. Humphreys (Gisborue), A. Swift (Taihape) and E. Buchanan (Feildin"). Mi- E. G. Dobson was accorded a vote of thanks for the interest he had taken in the breed.
