INCREASE IN EXPORTS. Exports from New Zealand during April were exceptionally heavy, and were valued at £8,423,000, which is a record high level for' this time of the year. Imports during April were also well up at £4,364,000. Exports during April of this year at £8,423,000 show an increase of £3,490,000, or more than 70 per cent., compared with those for April, 1939. Imports at £4,364,000 were £587,000 in. excess of those for April of last year, and only £91,000 less than the imports for April, 1938. During the four months of the present year to April 30 exports were valued at £30,123,000, compared witli £24,999,000 for the corresponding period of 1939, an increase of £5,124,000. The effect of restriction is seen in the figure for imports, which during Die latest four months were valued at £14,423,000, compared with £17,651,000 for the corresponding period of last year, a decrease of £3,228,000. The latest figure is £4,919,000 below that for the four months of 1938. Export and import values for the first four months of the last three years are shown in the following . comparative table:— .

It will bo seen that the active balance of exports over imports for the latest folir months is £15,700,000, or well over double that for the corresponding period of last year.
