During the year ended March 31 there was an increase in the numbers of all lines of stock slaughtered at the abattoirs as compared with the totals of the previous year, stated the abattoir manager (Mr A. M. Spilman) in his report which was presented to a meeting of the City Council on Monday. Some of this increase waj3 attributed' to stock being slaughtered at the abattoir during the winter months and the meat being forwarded to parts of the South Island, and also to the presence of the Maori Battalion in the city. All the meat killed in the past year was of a higher standard than for some years past. The report showed the total increases as 7234 head, made up as: 404 cattle, 32G_ calves, 51G3 sheep, 354 lambs and 957 pigs.
