CONGRESS DEMAND.
CALCUTTA. March 20. The National Congress adopted by an overwhelming majority a resolution demanding complete independence for India beyond the orbit of British Imperialism. A rainstorm reduced the expected attendance of 100,000 to 10,000. Mr Gandhi triumphed over the extremists at Congress. In a vigorous speech denouncing civil disobedience until his conditions of “no violence” were fulfilled, lie reproached the leaders of Congress for lack of discipline without which they were certain to bo defeated. He said: “I have never been defeated. We must break the bonds of slavery and fight to win. but 1 am your General. You must accept my conditions.” . , , , . . Congress rejected proposals tor Immediate action from the “anti-compro-mise” group of Congress members holding a rival conference a mile away under "the leadership of Mr Subhas Bose. The anti-compromise supporters passed a resolution to start on April 0 an All-India struggle, to withdraw from the war and procure executive independence.
